Teeth Whitening Pre & Post-Operative Instructions
With our in-office teeth whitening system, you will experience a revolutionary teeth whitening procedure. To ensure a relaxing appointment and maximally white teeth, read below for things you need to do before coming in.
Things you should do before the appointment:
• Have a meal before you come in.
• Clean your teeth immediately before your visit.
• Wear loose-fitting, comfy clothing.
• Ensure your face is clean, and avoid using lipstick and makeup.
• Bring headphones if you want to listen to music or your favourite podcast.
• The results will be between 1 to 5 shades of whiter teeth, depending on your original teeth’ colour.
• Your dentist will use a tooth colour shade chart to define the current colour shade of your teeth. After the whitening treatment, you’ll examine how many shades lighter your smile may become.
• The teeth whitening session includes professional teeth cleaning.
• Teeth whitening is not recommended for pregnant women.
• Teeth whitening is not suitable for individuals who have dental enamel problems.
What you can expect during your visit:
• The appointment is approximately 90 minutes long.
• Your teeth whitening treatment will be done by one of our dental professionals.
• We highly suggest that you don’t move during the teeth whitening treatment, don’t swallow your saliva, don’t speak or move your lips, or move your tongue. Otherwise, you are at risk of burns from the hydrogen peroxide gel.
• Tooth whitening can cause temporary tooth sensitivity or pain (known informally as “zingers”). If you feel any sensitivity during the process, inform our dental professional, and they will help you.
• Tooth whitening can cause a feeling of heat on the lips and gums. If you feel any heat or burns during the process, inform our dental professional, and they will help you.
• Please raise your hand if you need to inform our dental professional or ask for help. Refrain from moving your lips or tongue during the treatment.
Teeth Whitening Post-Op Instructions:
• Avoid smoking for 48 hours.
• You can moderately use electronic cigarettes.
• Avoid using any mouthwash for 24 hours, as well as coloured toothpaste.
• Avoid any foodstuffs or beverages that would leave a stain on a white shirt for seven days.
• Mild sensitivity to hot or cold beverages may occur. This usually passes within 1 – 2 days. If sensitivity continues, we suggest taking over-the-counter pain medication. We recommend combining two Ibuprofens with two Acetaminophen.
• If you feel gum sensitivity, do not brush that spot while brushing your teeth.
• Immediate whitening results can be quite dramatic due to minor teeth dehydration. It is usual for the colour to tone down somewhat after treatment when your teeth rehydrate to a natural white tone.
• Long-term results differ from patient to patient. This can depend on the colour shade of your teeth and contain habits such as smoking or drinking coloured beverages.
• You may need touchup whitening treatments every 9-12 months to keep the whitening colour results.
• You may feel a little burn sensation in the gum tissues due to slight leakage of the teeth whitening gel to the gums. This feeling will go away after hours of the whitening session.
